Report writing is integral to many people’s jobs yet, for most, their main skill lies in a completely different area. Not surprisingly, they find writing is difficult and time consuming. The problems are worse for those who must write in English when it is not their first language.
A team of managers in an energy company were facing just these issues. In order to create a suitable training programme, co-trainer Helen Goodier and I first read team members’ reports and talked with them about the help they needed. We then created a bespoke, one-day, report writing training workshop.
Our training gave the team a set of common writing skills and established a benchmark standard. They now know how to write simply and succinctly. In addition, they learned that by making small changes to the layout, the reports became easier to write and more enjoyable to read.
